Reading:
I will be using a novel study approach with interactive notebooks/journals.
*Read-aloud: Novels where students are required to reread and respond to the selection read aloud in the classroom at home. Then use the information in the novel to answer comprehension questions citing examples from the novel to justify their answer. Students will experience all reading skills through these novels.
The Accelerated Reader Program is an integral part of our reading program. This program measures student comprehension on a book they have read in their pre-determined range. The students will be given a reading assessment at the beginning of the year in order to determine their specific level or "range". Nothing will help students read better than practicing reading every single day! The goal for the year is 90 points with 80% accuracy. They will have time to read every day at school and for homework.
Writing/Grammar:
Writing and grammar skills will be taught through mini-lessons. I will be using many types of texts to show how authors use writing and grammar skills. This allows children to make a connection to the skill as opposed to using a skill in isolation. We will be doing a LOT of writing this year!
Word Study:
Gwinnett County is transitioning into "Word Study" this year, but it will still be called "Spelling" on the report card. The three components of the word study program will be comprised of phonics, spelling, and vocabulary.
Math:
Skills are broken down by units. Students should have mastered their multiplication facts prior to entering 5th grade. This will not be reviewed in 5th grade within the classroom. If your child is struggling with these, please assist them as this will make new skills difficult. We will be mastering computation, word problems, algebra, geometry, measurement, and data. Students will be required to justify their answers in written form and not just choose a multiple choice answer.
Social Studies:
We will travel back in time to the Westward Expansion of the United States in the 1840's! Our travels will end with present day. We have a over 170 years of history to cover in 9 months! History will be our main focus along with geography, civics/government, and economics.
Science:
The units we will cover will include: Earth Science, Life Science, and Physical Science.
Work habits/Conduct:
Students will begin each quarter with a 100/E. For each infraction (missing homework, behavior issue, etc.) 2 points will be deducted. At the end of the quarter, students will receive an "E" if they have 90-100%; "S" if they have 80-89%; "N" if they have 79-74%; and a "U" if there score is below a 74%. You will be able to view your child's weekly conduct/work habit grades on the parent portal.
