* What are lunch time procedures for parents?
If a parent or guest would like to eat lunch, a written note must be given to me in the morning. We will meet you at the lunch room door.
For safety reasons, parents will need to eat with their child only at the parent table then say goodbye to your child at the cafeteria door. School policy is that parents are not allowed to follow the students back to the classroom.
* Can my child bring a snack?
Yes. Students can eat their snack anytime during the day as they will know when they are hunger. It will not interfere with teaching though. We encourage healthy snacks and a water bottle. Colored water, juice, soda, or sports drinks are not allowed. (students can use Covey Cash to purchase the ability to bring a soda as a reward)
* What are the school hours at Duncan Creek?
The school hours are from 8:50a.m. - 3:20 p.m. The earliest students may arrive is 8:20. Car riders will be dismissed at 3:15 p.m. Bus call will begin at 3:20 p.m. Expect your child's bus to drop them off a little late during the first week of school.
*Recess
If your child has not earned a work habit or conduct infraction, s/he will have recess around 12:35p.m. following lunch.
* What do I do if my child has to miss a day of school?
Absences will only be excused for an illness when accompanied by a note. Your child will make up his or her work in class or at home depending on the nature of the assignments. Absences for vacation are not excused. I am not always able to check emails during school hours, therefore please do not email me to gather work before the end of the day.
* What are the hours for tardies and early check-outs?
Students arriving after 8:50 are tardy. A parent will then have to sign the child in at the front office. If you bring your child to school after 8:50, you must go with them to the office. Students are considered absent if they check-out (and do not return) before 12:10, or if they check-in after 12:10. Students are not allowed to check out after 3:00.
* What if my child wants to ride the bus home with a friend?
Transportation changes require a written note. Students must present the note to me first thing in the morning to receive their official bus pass. Only students with official bus passes will be allowed to board a different bus.
* What about homework?
Your child will have what we call "hidden" homework to study their current skills each night. They also need to read each and every night. Students will generally have math homework nightly Monday - Thursday, but should always be practicing their math facts. They will usually have reading homework in their journals, but it should not take them too much time. The county allows for 50 min. of homework each night for 5th graders. We allow them to start their homework during bus call to allow for questions.
Studying is important for many reasons: (1) It teaches responsibility and time management. This is an invaluable skill that must be taught, modeled, and practiced. (2) It helps your child practice skills that were introduced at school. (3) It allows parents to keep up with what is being taught in class.
